Instructions

This project was printed on the label of the yarn I bought, Bernat Baby's Breath. It is too long to retype here, but it is just one huge granny square. So if you've ever made a granny square, you can do it. The pattern called for white, blue, and yellow. I used white, purple, and yellow. Any two colors plus a neutral will work. Start in the middle with two rounds of white/neutral, then change to ...

Materials

Bernat Baby's Breath Super Bulky acrylic yarn (white, purple, yellow)

What was your inspiration?

The yarn was in the sale bin at Walmart, and it was SO silky-soft it just called out to me to take it home (haha). I liked the pattern on the label, so I bought enough to make the Granny Square Blanket.

What are you most proud of?

I made some mistakes (like doing 4 dc when I should have done 3) but they don't show, unless you know to look and then you really have to hunt for them. But I'm not giving it as a gift, so I didn't rip out and redo. My daughter's cat (who also happens to be silky soft) sort of "claimed" the blanket as I was making it, laying on corners even when I was working on it. When I finished and laid it on the floor to see how it looked, he came over immediately and lay down smack-dab in the middle. So I said, "Okay, Tucker, if you want it that badly, you can have it." My daughter will no doubt lay it at the foot of her bed to help keep the cat hair from showing (she has black sheets and he has long white hair-ha!).

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Any super-bulky baby yarn will do. Here are the amounts called for in the pattern:
white - approx. 14 oz, 432 yards
purple - approx. 7 oz, 216 yards
yellow - approx. 3.5 oz, 108 yards

Follow instructions for any basic granny square. Here is a great tutorial: http://www.crochetcabana.com/tutorials/granny_square.htm

If you use the link above, I used "Method 1" for starting and for joining rounds, as they did also in the tutorial.

this is my go to baby gift. i have made many in different colors. made one for my second before he was born. he is so attached to it (he is now 21 months old) that i had to make him a second one so he could have one while i wash the other!

That's cute. I'll bet your son will treasure both blankets even into adulthood. Whenever I make a quilt with no one specific in mind, my daughter asks if she can have it. She uses them constantly and washes them herself (she's 22). I like to think of it as an extra hug from me when she's cuddled under a quilt I made.
