What was your inspiration?
Homeschool Academy School principal retiring after 20 years. Our mascot is the dolphin. Quilt is 54" by 54". I wanted her to have a signature quilt so that people could tell her how much she meant to them and the service she gave our school.
What are you most proud of?
That I took on this project with only 1 month to get it completed. I think Grace will be thrilled with it. While getting the signatures (not an easy job as she kept coming into the office), I found that she was a big Tinkerbell fan-so I had to find Tinkerbell fabric to the back and I added a Tinkerbell to the front with Pigma ink pens. The white border holds the signatures and sentiments from families at the school.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
I ironed freezer paper onto the border before adding it to the quilt to aid in letting people write on it. I have learned that even if you ask people not to write in the seam allowance they still do, so I put the entire quilt top together before getting it signed so I did not have that problem. Use smaller stitches in the signature blocks to aid it taking out the freezer paper. I had 2 similar quilts to get signed at the same time, and even though I had labels on them, there are a few messages for each that got on the wrong quilts. I think it makes them that much more special.
