Category: Sewing

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Cute, Geeky, Retro / Vintage, Whimsical, Romantic

Materials

felt, needlepoint yarn, embroidery floss, felt beads, trim

What was your inspiration?

I love the teacup pincushions Mimi Kirchner makes and the illustrations of Johnny Grulle, so I took inspiration from both to design my little pincushions.

What are you most proud of?

I just love the way they look and the reaction people have to them. Little girls want to move in, I had several conversations at the last craft fair about who lives in them and what the rooms look like inside....magical. The size is just right to hold in your hand....I really enjoy making them.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

You really need to sew everything by hand, so wear reading glasses if you need to.
It's best to plan your colors in advance.
Keep glue to a minimum, you can't poke pins and needles through glue, it makes them gummy. I only glued on the trim at the border, everything else is hand sewn.
Felt is very forgiving and a bit stretchy....you can use craft felt (cheap) or wool felt (not cheap) either is fine.
