I wanted a summer dress that I could wear to a picnic. I wanted it to be pretty!

The contrasting pink zipper. one of the best parts of making your own clothes are the little surprise details you can add.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Practice installing an invisible zipper on scrap fabric.

Those are great! Its so hard to find dresses that are made either for larger women and especially decent dresses for an older little girl -- kids sizes don't fit her, but a lot of adult ones are too low-cut! It's frustrating -- I might have to try sewing something like this, but I'm a beginner and need some practice!

dianna, i just took your sewing course and i think you are a very very good teacher. it was a great refresher course. i don't know if you read these or not, but i am a pretty good sewer and have worked in the sewing manufacturing business for about 10-15 years. i now have the time to devote to home sewing and am finding that i don't know as much as i think i do. i would like to know more about apparal fabrics especially for heavy women, stretch, knit and so on. for dresses, skirts, pants, and blouses. which fabric lays best, sews best and looks best on a heavy person? size 24 to 30. also you can't find many patterns over 26 so how do you make a traditional pattern larger? if you can help me with this i'd be very grateful. e-mail jbylam@live.com. might be a good online class!

Hi there! I've found a lot of fabrics have lycra in them, so i just find the biggest pattern for my size in the same styles as everyone else is wearing and use the stretchable fabrics. I've found stretch satins, and stretch poplins, both of which make really cute and flirty dresses for us larger gals. I'm in a size 14 and I know you could do it too!

jbylam, a lot of times JoAnn's Inc has classes from beginners to advance. McCall's and Simplicity each make a pattern for sizing for clothing. But I found that you need two people at times to help get the measurements right.

looks so light and a cool dress to wear on these hot days. It actually brings back some childhood memories for me. I'm going to look for this pattern.

Great dress! It is in a pattern that is flattering to most body types, and can be made in any fabric pattern/color! Sadly, I think I just paid over $50 for a dress of this style from a lovely site. Because I can handle the difficulty rating of this dress, I can now just make my own dress! Thanks.
