What advice would you give someone starting this project? It's HUGE but it's pretty amazing once it's done. It will take a lot of workspace, and a lot of patience. It's not HARD sewing, but it's awkward and it gets heavy and difficult to manipulate once the stuffing starts to go in. Work slowly and carefully. And it takes a lot more stuffing than you think it will, so plan accordingly.

Your son, my grandson, is a lucky kid. That squid looks like it would be a wonderful neck pillow. --Grandma Kathleen

It would if it were smaller, but it's a great body pillow! :)

I love this! I'm going to make one for my science classroom. Great job!

Do you still have the templates for the pieces, by any chance? It looks like the link is broken and I'm dying to make this. Also, do you remember how much you enlarged the templates? Thanks so much, even if you can't help.

I found a Bing archives photo of the pattern pieces, unfortunately, it's small. http://ts2.mm.bing.net/th?id=HN.607991722295951863&pid=1.7 I can't recall how much I enlarged it (and it may not be accurate to this smaller image, anyway) - the longer tentacle is just about 4 feet long so that may give you a starting point. I am looking through my files to see if I saved off a copy of the pattern or my notes, I will update again if I find those. :)

Also there is a tutorial here but without most of the images. It's got pretty good text descriptions of the process. http://build-a-diy.tumblr.com/post/60084351985/8-foot-giant-squid-pillow-youll-need-2-yards
