What was your inspiration?

My husband's grandmother has been talking about making herself a black and white quilt for a long time now. Every time I would go "shopping" in her fabric stash she always reminded me "Not the black and whites!". Well, I have the feeling it won't be something she'll ever do for herself, so I did it for her. In February 2012, I contacted the entire family and asked everyone descended from her (and those married to them) to send me a small bit of fabric. While I waited to receive it all, I collected all the black and white fabric I could from the various stores around here. GG just just happened to give me a book on kaleidescope quilts in May and I decided I needed to make that pattern. I made the main pattern with just the black and whites, and then added a paper pieced heart border usingplain black fabric and the fabric everyone sent me. We gave it to her for her 69th birthday on July 31st and she cried. I've never felt so good about something in my life!

What are you most proud of?

That I was able to keep it a secret from her. She's the only person I know who quilts and every time I needed advice I had to figure out a way to ask without her finding out.
