What was your inspiration?
This cake was made for my grandmother's 88th birthday! She loves pansies, ivy, butterflies...and so it was created!
Those exciting facts being stated, this cake nearly sent me to the asylum! Well, not the cake actually, the weather. It was SO hot the day this cake was made. The hand painted wafer butterflies and gumpaste flowers and leaves, that my daughter and I made, were fine. We made them days ahead. But the fondant...my gosh, the fondant. It suffered. We suffered. Plus, the heat made the cakes compress a bit. I think you can even see the difference in the second picture when we were still working on it, and the first picture when the cake was at its destination. The bottom tier is bulging.
What are you most proud of?
The butterflies, I think. My daughter should be most proud of the ivy...she did an amazing job! Did I mention she is 15?!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
AIR CONDITIONING! ;)
Hope you enjoy it anyway!
