What was your inspiration?
This was just a fun little drum set that a mother asked me to plan out for a party for her son. All she could say that he liked was "DRUMS", and if there was anything I could come up with using them in a cake, she would be happy - so I figured...why not just do a drum set!
What are you most proud of?
I thought that I figured out how to get the drums at a good slant pretty well, it was pretty tricky due to the fact that, although you can't see them very well (sorry about that - not the best of pictures), the two front drums are actually on very tiny stick legs. I had to basically hot glue the tri-pod legs into the base of the cardboard cake base, cover it in fondant and make sure they lasted during the car ride for delivery. TRICKY - TRICKY - TRICKY!
I also thought my idea to use the kid pack size fruit jelly candies as the stage lights turned out pretty neat in the end.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Try to take the delivery into consideration when planning the structure issues of your cake. You can put 15 hours into a cake that looks fabulous in the kitchen and have it crumble on delivery if you don't take the beginning, middle, and end of the construction of your design into account. Please, please, please think about all steps before wasting a ton of time on something that won't make it past the driveway!
