What was your inspiration?
I was inspired by Frida Kahlo's Self Portrait, 1948 in which she wraps a Tehuana dress around her head. I originally started out as making it more like another cloth Matryoshka doll, but didn't like the bowling ball shape. Pyramids in Mexico are considered very spiritual. Frida & Diego not only collected ancient carvings but they build a small pyramid in their backyard and built a fireplace in the house to resemble one. The two images came together. It's something I will revisit later.
What are you most proud of?
After making the white lace over pink fabric (similar colors to the original painting) I almost gave up. I thought it looked too sweet, but I couldn't put it aside. So I finished it. I like it, it's a start. I did enjoy embroidering her face and using the lace.
