Merino fleece tends to be very greasy, up to 50% of the weight of the raw fleece. Grease holds the dirt and smell. I like to wash mine first because it is easiest time to get out most of the grease while the fiber is open. Also merino felts easily and if something goes awry I will only loose fleece not my time, for example, that I have spent preparing and spinning it.
