Instructions

Hope this is where I'm supposed to post a pic. I wanted some ideas for the middle of the piece - I'm having trouble with transition pieces. Also I would like to put a tree in somewhere when its finished (diamond wise) I'm still looking for fabric - I know the one I used looks like a giraffe! I'm having fun with technique tho - I showed my start to the quilt shop in town and they loved it.

I've got a long way to go but I did have fun with the project - I'm learning to dye my own material so I hope to incorporate that in the piece as well - the tree is gone and so are those couple of pieces that bothered me - I will have to post a new pic as soon as i remember how i posted this pic!

This is beautiful. I love your sky and the way the animals peek out. I'm going to put this class on my wishlist and take it this summer.

When looking for landscapey-type fabrics, check out the Goodwill or other 2nd-hand store for clothing -shirts, pants, skirts, drapery, table linens all have a lot of yardage. Create your own textures with various tools -wadded foil, dipped into acrylic paint or dye - over-stamped onto a base fabric (a printed design is even better, as the layers add visual complexity and depth), fresh green leaves (supple, will hold color and you press the shape onto the fabric), pine needles, and other found objects can be used as stamps. Use inexpensive foam stamps from the craft store, or brush color across a torn jagged edge of paper to create subtle cloud or distant mountain range effects.

Hi Ginger! The surrounding "ground" fabrics look great - perhaps you can do some fabric blending - using snippets of fabric under tulle - to soften the edges of the "water" by adding a transition area - this could be leafy fabrics that you've overdyed to a slightly blue hue (so it looks like the water's edge, overlapping the leaves), or expand the water area, or overlap some leaves onto the water diamonds to make the edges less geometric. Overall, GREAT beginnings! Good for you!!

Thanks for your help - the blue was going to be water - but it does stand out too much - the tree there with the big leaf sections i planned on cutting more - i wanted to fuse first tho - i cut then thought about putting the fusing stuff on - I did have all flowers in the front part - it just looked overwhelmed with flowers - its a beginning project for sure and will take me lots of time - i find myself changing it as days go by - thanks again for the suggestions - I need them. oh I also had the thought - what if I used that snippet technique for the tree in the end of course - it wold make for lacier leaves? And I still need a good tree truck fabric or I'll have to paint my own fabric - we only have one store in town - I cant expect them to have all this landscape fabric

great start - but what is the blue in the middle supposed to represent? It doesn't fit in the flow of the other pieces. Seems that you should add more of the animal or flower fabrics or shade down the blue a bit as your eyes immediately go THERE. The transitions you are looking to get are done by stepping down colors incrementally- hard to do sometimes, but it takes time and searching for the right fabric. sometimes its the back of the fabric that allows you to transition a bit more smoothly. As far as your tree - try the rule of thirds - divide the quilt into 3 sections and see where the tree would work best - sometimes it can help "hide" the difficult transition areas by covering it. The leaves seem to be a big large for the quilt, but if the quilt is bigger then they may fit - I would try putting the tree in the middle with branches outward to either side of the quilt with smaller interest on either side - and smaller leaves some a bit larger to give a perspective. Again, good start with the diamonds and animals and flowers within them - send more pics as you get further into it.

Goodwill Outlet, in Austin, TX, Goodwill "bins" in Portland, OR, sell items by the bag or by the pound--this is a great place to pick up and recycle bits of fabric for quilting purposes.
