Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Other

Style: Whimsical

Materials

Fondant, wire, floral tape

What was your inspiration?

Maggie Austin's class. Inspiration for the colour was a plum off a tree in my garden. The colour has not come out so well in the photo - it is shades of dark plum but looks a bit black in the photograph.

What are you most proud of?

I rarely do sugar flowers, and have never done a piece of fruit in fondant before. I was very happy how it turned out - I used an actual plum and leaves and a small branch from my tree as a guide.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This is my second attempt at doing frills as taught in Maggie Austin's class. I did try using a pasta machine to roll fondant out but had a lot of problems so ended up again just rolling the frills by hand. I think persevering with a pasta machine would perhaps have been better! I used leaf glaze on the plum to make it shiny - worked well!
