First Spindle

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Spindling: From Fluff to Stuff »

Difficulty:

Category: Spinning

Type of item: Functional

For: Other

Style: Traditional

Materials

White springy wool and a 10" maple top worl drop spindle.

What was your inspiration?

I have a lot of worsted weight and wanted a more thin yarn.

What are you most proud of?

It's pretty even and I'm happy it actually holds together!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

There's more forgiveness in the process if you spin thicker yarn.

Did you wind onto the rolls yourself, or you have a winder? What great idea.

I was gifted with a ball winder for Christmas one year and to fit the toilet paper rolls onto it I have to make a "spacer" ring using a velcro version of a cord minder. I wrap it around the winder's spool and then fit the toilet paper roll over it and carefully wind my yarn onto it for plying later.

Thank you :) It was certainly a challenge to keep it even, especially for my first try at spinning.

I had planned on sending it to my biological mother as this is my first hand spun yarn on a spindle along with my first wheel spun yarn. I felt that she had missed out on on quite a few of my "firsts" after we kids went into the foster care system that I wanted to give her one or two of them back. I remember her being a gifted crochet/knitting artist and am looking forward to seeing what she will make from them both.

Sorry about the multiple posts but it wouldn't let me return to a new line. Here is the rest of it: * I carefully spread the fiber out so that it looks like that Halloween cobweb decorations and I can see the direction that the fibers are flowing. This allows me to pick out the vegative matter and other debris from my fiber. * I spend a few hours picking through all of my fiber in this matter, carefully placing the "cleaned fibers" into a ziploc bag to keep it clean. This ends up layering my fiber like those biscuits that pull apart in flaky layers. * When I am ready to spin, I remove one layer of my fiber, which is about two palm sizes and pull the fibers into a pre-draft about the size of a twizzler stick. I am careful to follow the flow of the fibers if I can. * When spinning I set the spindle to a slow spin and manually add twist with my drafting hand (right hand pulls the fiber out of the left) as I pull out the fiber. The slow spin on the spindle allows the twist to not unwind behind my work and it doesn't snap the thread from being too wound. * As the thread length grows to about 5 or 6 inches I can add a faster spin and this give me more of a rhythm of draft and twist/pull, allow the built up twist to travel, draft and twist/pull, built up twist travel, ect. * Wrap thread once it reaches arm length and repeat.

Wow; you got it so thin! What's your secret?

Hmmm, I'm not sure what I'm doing that would be considered a secret but I can try to outline what I do when I spin. Maybe that will help you pick out what the 'secret' is?

* For this spindle I was pulling about 3 or 4 inches of fiber from the rest of the roving.

I appreciate the compliment, this is a picture of my first try at spinning yarn :) That took about 3 days to spin after a 5 minute rushed 'lesson' from the woman I had bought the spindle and fiber from. The second spindle's worth of yarn is coming along at the same quality and I'll have pictures posted when I use up the rest of the fiber.
