Share a little about the ingredients and techniques used to create this dish/item. I couldn't get yams, so I used sweet potatoes, which was close enough in my book. Also, I couldn't find maple syrup, so I used traditional Dutch stroop (the kind they use on traditional Dutch pancakes). The rest of it was as close to the ingredients Evan used in the video as I could find. I made a vegetable shortening and butter crust, blind baking as directed. I baked the actual pie fifteen minutes extra because it seemed a little jiggly when I pulled it out at 45 minutes. That might be the reason for the large crack in the middle. I will definitely try this again very soon. I'll use just a touch less salt and just a little more stroop, although someone just told me where I could find maple syrup, so I will probably just pick that up and use it. The crust was not pretty, but was perfect.

What are you most proud of? It was a really good first attempt. I'm encouraged to perfect my pie making skills. And I'll definitely invest in a glass pie dish.

What advice would you give someone starting this project? Just do it. Follow the instructions. Fall in love with pie making.

Next time pull it out of the oven when it's still a little jiggly and you won't get that crack. I'll bet it was delicious!
