What was your inspiration?
The gorgeous quilt displayed in the magazine, warm colors blocked out with black strips - and the desire to create a beautiful wedding present for special friends.
What are you most proud of?
This quilt was made entirely from my stash for a bride who's favorite color is turquioise, so I chose all the blue hues and purple to accent it. I didn't feel black was very bride-like, so I opted for a softer color - lavender. A friend got a new longarm quilter with computer program, and this was the first quilt to load onto it. We learned as we went along with the help of another friend, and it was great fun! The quilt came out beautifully and we were so excited we screamed and danced!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Find a place where you can use someone's longarm machine with guidance...and then have fun! Make your outside sashings on the quilt top wider than you need and attach leader strips to the top and bottom so that you can quilt nicely as far out as you wish. Smooth the surface ahead of the stitching with a 1/4" wooden dowel broken into about a 14" section - leave one end jagged to easily sweep up stray thread bits. Most importantly if you are using a computer program - do not hit the Stop button if you run out of thread! Use the Pause button so that you can back up and continue on easily. (you only have to learn that lesson once!)
