Learn It

Vintage Cakes, Modern Methods »

Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Home

Style: Traditional, Formal / Bridal, Romantic, Mod, Classic, Whimsical, Retro / Vintage

Materials

Fondant covered cake, royal icing and gum paste

What was your inspiration?

I've taken the first lesson in Vintage Cakes. I love the look of brush embroidery. I chose the all over pattern for the cake based on the flower I had made from gum paste.

What are you most proud of?

My patience! Actually, the all over design didn't take as long as I thought it would. Starting out, I thought I'd be working forever, when in reality, it took maybe an hour. I learned a lot from each petal, that's for sure!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Don't use too much water and practice on cardboard first.
