This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2012 »

Instructions

With the bright colors in this quilt top, I selected a more pastel blue for the sashing in order to give the eye a rest. (Speaking of rest, you won't get much sleep with these bright colors!!). The blue was also a great separation when I added the brick border. This was a fun, fun project for me and I learned so much. Now....for the quilting. I am new to machine quilting, so cross your ...

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Whimsical, Funky

Materials

I used a stack of fat quarters that I had in my stash.

What was your inspiration?

I saw some beautiful Carribean style dishes with mostly blue/green/yellow colors and that is where it started. The other colors just kinda got added as the quilt progressed. It reminds me of the Carribean islands....I wish I had a beach bungelow on one of the islands to use this quilt...LOL!!

What are you most proud of?

That I finished the blocks and got it put together, as there were many techniques new to me. Some blocks I liked more than others, but I valued every lesson that came with every block. I feel like I really progressed....now let's see how I do with the quilting. Yikes.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I would advise to take your time and to re-read (re-watch) the instructions as many times as you need to prior to starting. I hate the seam ripper!!

I love the bright colors and I also like that you used different background fabrics.

Thanks so much. I decided to have Each block stand on it's own with it's unique background. I am doing this also for the 2013 BOM quilt. I do want to make one with a lot of white background negative space though as a think they are especially beautiful when quilted, but I have yet to select the quilt pattern.

I meant it was scary "cutting", not " jutting" the back fabric. Love this spell check...lol. Lo, I believe I left a comment, but I love you color choices in your quilt. You can't tell by my quilt, but I am much more the traditionalist!

Thnks ConvertiQuilter. I am using different background fabric for the 2013 BOM also. I love white background negative space, especially when quilted. But I have not found the pattern I want yet for that. Can't wait to see your blocks!

Thanks for the kind words. I have been looking at everyone's quilting work and folks have done some beautiful quilting! I'm looking at mine with basting pins all over and hoping I do at least half as well. It has been fun.

Thank you...I love the fabric selection stage, but you never know how it is going to come together until the end ;)

Thanks so much for the lovely comments. I have taken a few FMQ classes via Craftsy (including Leah Day's) and think I am ready to give the quilting a whirl. I will keep you posted! Fingers crossed.

Thanks, Scheri. My favorite part of quilting is actually picking out the colors/fabrics to use. I also love the end stage as it comes together.

Thanks! I am glad I made the back like the jan block, but it was scary jutting that big piece of fabric from end to end. Your blocks are lovely (I checked out your projects). I LOVE the colors.

Thanks! Yes, Leah is a great teacher (and I like Ann Peterson's course, also). The best part about finishing a quilt is staring another one. It sounds like you have an awesome sewing environment. Mine is the dining room table which my husband thinks he will never see the top for dinner again.
