After researching the Revolutionary war period online and looking at pattern books at the store, my granddaughter selected the style elements she wanted. I made the pattern from her measurements out of newspaper. This was primarily done on the sewing machine, but there was some handwork too.Difficulty:

What was your inspiration?
A special request from a grandchild is always an inspiration. The Fifth Grade students from all the schools in the district visited a Revolutionary War-era re-enactment site as a joint field trip, and the students were required to come in costume. It was fun to see her excitement about wearing the costume to school that day.
What are you most proud of?
She got lots of compliments about her "nice gown" - it was the most complete costume of any of the students on the field trip. We even researched footwear and were able to find something appropriate. She was a happy girl that day.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
When making a pattern from scratch, make both sides, pin them together, and try them on. Don't forget to add your seam allowances. If you are an advanced seamstress, just have fun with it.
