Materials

Roving & Spun Lamb's wool for wet felting

What was your inspiration?

My friend's charming wool felted ballet slippers.

I loved them so much, she invited me over one Saturday to teach me how to wet felt. The pattern making process seemed so hard to grasp at first, but she told me that it would become clearer as we became more involved in the process...and she was right.

What are you most proud of?

I understand that the downfall of many first projects is not felting the layers together properly, so they peel away from each other. Determined not to let this happen to me (after so many hours of work), I kneaded and wet these thoroughly. I'm happy to say they felted beautifully.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Learn how to do this with someone who is set up for the process. I couldn't have done this in my own kitchen or laundry room very easily. My friend had a special table rigged for the process, as well as her own olive oil soap formula and a lovely selection of colored wools. She had all the right tools for the job, which makes for a great first experience.

Those are darling!! Is it done in one piece, or do you assemble them?

These were made all in one piece. I had the hardest time visualizing how they would turn out. There was a piece of bubblewrap (pattern) in the middle that kept the sides of the slippers apart. The whole piece needed to be turned while felting. When my friend felt the time was right, we removed the bubble wrap and shapped the slipper.
