Materials

I take empty poly-woven feed bags and re-purpose them into tote bags.

What was your inspiration?

I raise backyard chickens and when I saw other people recycling these feed bags, I put out a request for some bags. People from all over the country started sending me empty feed bags. They are stronger and look better than the reusable grocery store bags.

What are you most proud of?

I am very happy raising my backyard chickens. I started out bringing home 5 newly hatched chicks from a friends farm, then I ordered 16 day-old chicks in the mail, and now I've hatched chicks from eggs. This hobby has been very rewarding and now I am able to sell farm fresh eggs to people in my area!!!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I do not own a serger. The most difficult part of this project is sewing down the flaps of the bottom of the bag. If you don't want to sew them, you can use Duct Tape. All of my seams are double sewn for extra strength.

I love this idea. I have a couple of those bags lying around and now I have a pattern to follow. I do want to turn one into a "fancy" purse too. Thanks for sharing!
