Faux Leather Dress
Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Victorian / Steampunk, Goth, Rock / Punk

Materials

Faux leather, brass studs, thread

What was your inspiration?

This was made for my Fashion Illustration 3 class. I had a Steampunk theme for the whole collection, but I did not want to make this dress garishly so. I used brass studs and leather but kept the silhouette red-carpet.

What are you most proud of?

Sewing the faux leather was a pain and a half using my Singer Disc-O-Matic, but I prevailed with a lot of patience and baby powder (3M tape didn't work)

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Keep going, you shall prevail.

I have made numerous ensembles from faux leather and 'pleather'. I have found that if one cuts tissue paper 'pattern pieces' that match the pieces you are going to sew, then place the matching piece of tissue on TOP of the faux leather you are trying to seam, sew through all layers, then tear off the tissue, that it sews very well. For top stitching, cut strips of tissue paper a little wider than the the foot you are using, and place the strips under the foot on top of the faux leather, then sew your top stitching through all layers and then remove the tissue paper. I used talcum powder when I these fabrics first came on the market, but much prefer tissue. By the way, your garment is just lovely!! Keep up the good work!!
