Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this piece. This is mostly for lmfr, who's doing such a great job. Thought you'd enjoy seeing this exercise I did before starting a new painting. I was trying out different colors and I discovered that Winsor Newton Ultramarine Violet has a huge amount of granulation, so I wanted to experiment what would happen if I used it with other colors. Look at the one on the bottom left in particular -- see what happened with the blossoms? fun stuff. I took notes, and I'll stick this in my notebook for reference.

Beautiful vibrancy to those colors!

Mary, I've just watched the Class from start to finish. Thank you for all the tips and for sharing your knowledge! I started with graphite and ink sketching and have just been experimenting with watercolour. I find my left brain dominance wants to get a finer brush and add detail so it's a great (and challenging) exercise for me to just relax and play.

Hooray, PJ. I had one teacher who would say, "Leave your brain behind." I love that -- it makes us really see what's there, not what we interpret. There's a really fun book called Painting from the Inside Out: 19 Projects and Exercises to Free Your Creative Spirit, by Betsy Dillard Stroud. She has some great ideas that might help try bigger approaches.
