This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Stupendous Stitching: Adventures in Surface Design »

Instructions

After adding the couching, decorative stitching and a bit of hand embroidery I sliced it up sewed it back together. Then I added more couching, decorative stitching, hand embroidery and tiny enhancements with paint. I put a sleeve on the back, deliberately hanging it unevenly to enhance it's unusual shape.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

For: Other

Style: Mod, Funky, Casual, Whimsical

Materials

Hand painted cotton, various types of cording, colored threads, embroidery floss

What are you most proud of?

I took this piece in a different direction, made the quilt a wonky shape and hung it off-kilter. I also bent Carol's rule/wise advice about spacing the stitching (but there are no rules, so I knew I'd be okay!) and made room for the quilting step.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

After making your first Stupendous Stitching piece, make another and take it in a new direction!

How did you sew it back together? By hand or machine? A seam or just overlapping?

Hi Claire, the sewing back together part was done by machine, sewn right sides together with a small seam allowance.

Thanks for the idea of slicing and dicing your original piece and sewing the pieces back together. And then adding more. Now I know what to do with my very first SS piece.

Fabulous! Love the colors, the irregularity, and cut-and-sew-back-together approach. Will have to try my hand at this.

Absolutely gorgeous! I need to make a small piece for a silent auction and I think I've found my inspiration! Any hints or suggestions about cutting it - you did the beading after cutting, right?

Thanks Mary! This piece doesn't have beading, maybe it's the french knots that look like beads (I made small dots with paint and then put french knots in the center). But yes, if I was to add beads, I would do the beading after all the machine work (including quilting) was done. I'd love to see the piece you come up with for the silent auction!

I love what you have done here...as I was wondering about crossing the couching. Hope mine looks any where near as good as this when I start :) And i love the vibrant colours you have used and the contrast in the backing fabric. You must be more than a little proud of yourself :)

Thanks Terri! As long as you go slowly when couching over the crossing point of the two pieces of cord you should be okay :)

Thanks Carol! There's so much room to take your method and run with it. I had so much fun mixing it up a bit :-)
