Instructions

I made up the pattern but used Mary's technique (from Hot Potatoes). She is AWESOME! and this is a great technique. I buy my velvet and stamps from her. I got my iron from the Salvation Army - old with no steam holes.

You can shop at her Rubber Stamp store to buy the goodies. It's worth it - her velvet is the best.

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Romantic

Materials

Velvet, lining fabric, rubber stamps

What was your inspiration?

I saw Mary O'Neil back in the late 1990s on the Carol DuVall Show. She demonstrated this technique. I was hooked. I've made all kinds of things with velvet.

What are you most proud of?

Sewing velvet can be a pain because it shifts. But I use the double-sided tape method that Mary demonstrated. Wow...what a time saver.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Practice first. Once you emboss the velvet, you are kind of stuck with it.

I made my scarves a lot longer - -I bought 2 yards of fabric and cut 5 strips that were 72" long and about 9" wide. So I gave lots of scarves as gifts.

Also, use her stamps. They work the best because they are designed for this technique.

Sigh, I always enjoyed watching Carol's shows and remember the episode with her funny friend Mary. Thank you for renewing this great craft.

I know. I long for the old HGTV. I did find Matt and Shari on PBS! And Mary is awesome. I ordered some stamps from her about 10 years ago. I had two of the same stamp (one for me and one for a friend), she actually called me!

what kind of velvet did you buy, I know some will not emboss. Great look. I have made several stamps from old mouse pads glued to a scrap piece of 2 X 4, this allows you to make it as long as you would like, just keep glueing stamps on the wood.

I bought it at Hot Potatoes - if you go to the pattern link above, it will take you to Mary's blog - then you can follow her links. But yes, you have to use a particular type of velvet.
