What was your inspiration?
I attended my first sewing class at Jo-ann fabrics and made a skirt that turned out ... all right. So, in order to improve upon it and make sure I had the steps really down in my head, I went straight home and made a second one on my own.
What are you most proud of?
Outside of a speed lesson a family friend gave me when I was first learning my sewing machine, this elastic-waist skirt (or pair of skirts) was the first thing I've sewn. So I'm just proud of myself for finally taking the steps to learn and coming away with the knowledge to make this piece. The skirt itself is a bit short for my taste, especially because it has a small slit in the back, and it isn't lined, so I may not wear it out, but yay for my first project!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
The most important thing I learned is to be patient and be kind to yourself. If you mess up, it's a learning experience. If you break the needle on your sewing machine (not that that happened to me...), it's a learning experience. Every mistake makes you better.
