This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2013 with Laura Nownes »

Instructions

A 20" or 22" square up ruler would be helpful squaring this 17" block.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Classic, Traditional

Materials

100% Cotton Fabric Guttermann 100% Cotton Thread, 50 wt.

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to make a black, white & red quilt after I saw some in the 2012 BOM - just Awesome!

What are you most proud of?

This is a 17.5" block with a 12.5" block within. This is the largest block I've ever made. The outer black triangles are "setting" triangles, as they are part of the quilt background. This Sampler is put together rather scattered in its arrangement - definitely not symmetrical in its layout. A bit hard to envision how all the other pieces fit in. If I figure it out, I will be most proud. :-)

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Be careful where you place your background fabric since its part of fitting all your blocks together. The use of the background fabric is not spelled out. You kind if catch on as you go.

I like the way the two reds "lift" the centre of the block. Very nice.

You block is beautiful. In fact I think you've inspired me to make a second quilt at the same time in black/white/red. I've always stayed away from black/white for some reason or another. So of course, no stash. Well I guess that means some shopping!! As far as figuring the background, I keep going back and looking at the full quilt which is pictured on the first set of materials we received in January. You can kind of figure where the background pieces fit in each block. You're right -- if we don't pay attention to that, it will just be a mish-mash of colors everywhere.

Laurie CA - you crack me up! I agree that the BW & R fabrics are very striking. I hope all my fabric choices work well in these blocks! Now go back and buy SOME of that fabric - FQ's, and background yardage or what ever you fall in love with. It's all about Happy Quilting!

Love it:) You have inspired me to go look at my fabric and figure out what I am going to do. I just love the red, black and white. I was at Jo Ans today getting some background and backing fabric got side tracked and had 5-6 bolts of fabric in the basket that where red and black. I was good and put them back.

Thank you so much! It's not that easy working with just 3 colors. Hopefully I 'll have the right fabric designs for all the different blocks! Lol

I'm not sure whether its "A" or "B" but I think my block is the "B" block. It was on the 2nd page and the dimensions started with a 6.5" square center and finished at a cut size of 17.5" It looked like the one she was making with those big white "setting" triangles.

You asked whether the big triangles had to be in your background. I think you need to use your background fabric for these big 10" triangles, if you want your 12" block within, to "float" like in her Sampler. You could use black, that you love, but the block will appear 17" when you surround it with your background. If you like it -go for it! :-)

I followed the one on the 2nd page that had a 6.5" square center and those big 10" triangles. At first I wasn't sure which block to make, then realized that the second one looked like the teachers. I would say this is "B."

Thank you. My large black triangles are called "setting" triangles, so I have learned. The teachers background is white & at first I didn't realize these triangles she attached,in white, were made with background fabric. Check out the layout carefully when doing other blocks. I sure will be on guard. Happy Quilting!

Yes, but I love your black fabric, do you think it has to be in the backround fabric?
