Easy 2-row knitted lace

Instructions

Long version:

Cast on 9 stitches.

Row 1: Cast off 2 stitches. Yarn Over (Bring yarn to front, then back over right needle) then knit 1. Yarn Over (Bring yarn to front, then back over right needle) then knit 1. Knit 1. Yarn Round Needle Twice (Bring yarn to front, then back over right needle, then under and over again) then knit 2 together. Knit 1. [It will look like you have 10 stitches on the needle]

Row 2: Purl 3. Unwrap the second half of the yarn-round-needle-twice and drop it. Purl 6.

Repeat both rows until desired length.

Materials

cotton yarn, knitting needles, ribbon to fit eyelets. I used: Wendy Supreme Cotton DK and 3mm needles, and the edging is about 3cm wide. I will add details once I try some larger yarns. You could make it smaller with crochet cottons and smaller needles, obviously, but I'm not a masochist.

What was your inspiration?

I went on holidays and wanted a very compact knitting project for the plane...then left the instructions for the lace I was going to learn behind! So I had to make up a new pattern. Since I hate garter stitch, I made it all in stocking stitch, worked sideways for useability, and only one pattern row makes it easy to remember. (although I still managed to make a mistake!)

What are you most proud of?

I think it will be my go-to lace edging - it's quick to knit and I like to use this style of lace often. I also really like the ruffly edge - it was unexpected, but very pretty.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Any beginner who can cast on, cast off, knit and purl can learn this - the new skills are knit 2 together and yarn over, which are easy if someone shows you. Or watch a video - I suggest these ones: (This site also has videos for the continental method if that's your style).
