What was your inspiration?

I have been interested in dying fabric but have never given it a serious try. Malka Dubrawsky's fabrics are so vibrant and kind of funky that I knew I had to take her class.

What are you most proud of?

The Procion Dyes are awesome. The colors are very rich.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

It's great to have a space to work in where you're not worried about making a mess. It really wasn't too bad, but it's nice not worrying whether I've gotten wax or dye on something I shouldn't.

Getting the wax out was more challenging because I did it in the kitchen. I found it easier getting the wax out by running water over the fabric as I rubbed it out. (This is following the hot water bath of course.) Since I didn't want wax down the drain that was a little challenging. I had a mesh strainer available to catch the wax.

Thank you! I started with white. Added wax circles, and dyed Dark Orange. Discharged, and dyed Turqoise. I talked briefly about the process here http://threadtime.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/fun-with-dying-fabric/

In high school we were taught to iron over the wax with a newsprint paper over it to absorb the wax.

I like that idea. Seems like it would get rid of most of the wax and make it easier to get out what was left. Thinking about working on new fabrics this weekend. May give it a try. Thanks for the tip.

Thank you, I've been toying with the idea of taking this class but was also concerned about the mess. I'm a quilter and would like to incorporate my own designs in my quilts. Can you tell me if you think it would be successful writing words in cursive in the wax resist - would they come out clear and ledgable? If so, I want this class.

It would depend how fine (small) you want the writing. There are tjantings (http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/3742-AA.shtml) that Malka mentions that should create lines and might work for printing. The problem is there isn't a continuous flow of wax the way you would have with ink. Malka also uses calligraphy brushes that might work depending on what you are aiming for. I think you have to work with the wax a bit to get a feel for how to control the image. But I will say that I bought the tjantings with text in mind. I do plan to work with it. I won't aim for small writing at this point. Good luck. I do think you would enjoy the class.

Lindie: Take a look at this YouTube video showing Batik being created with Jtantings. May give you an idea whether they would work for what you want. http://www.dharmatrading.com/tjaps/index.html?utm_source=march_2012&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=tjaps
