Good base by light sanding followed by acrylic fast drying primer undercoat and you can't go wrong. This was painted, distressed/ sanded and waxed..

Love it! What brand of primer do you use? I've been using Zinsser Bulls Eye 1 2 3

That's expensive! I use that when I transform kitchen doors which are melamine! It's excellent but on wood I use the Leyland fast drying acrylic primer undercoat in one - it goes on and dries ready for re- painting in no time so makes projects quicker to complete..
