Woven Strips Mug Rug

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Mod, Whimsical, Funky, Cute, Casual

Materials

6" Charm Squares; cotton thread; scotch tape; batting.

What was your inspiration?

After determining the maximum use of fabric for Dresden Plate blades using charm squares I ended up with a pile of one inch pinked edge strips. I wanted to use these in some kind of small project and designed a basket weave Mug Rug.

What are you most proud of?

I hate to waste fabric, I used strips that are too narrow to use with a seam. The raw edges are worked into the basket weave design or caught with quilting in the binding. I used scotch tape to hold the woven strips together when adding the last two edge strips. Even the binding is done using (trapped) raw edge strips. Everything is machine stitched.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Let your creativity flow. I love the design process!

Love this clever, clever idea! Plus the fabrics, of course! Where is that lovely Dresden plate going to live?

Thanks Darns. I don't know its destination yet - just had to work with these fabrics and play around with a Dresden design in my head. I sketched it out last night. Now to do the math and pick more fabrics....

Thanks Pam! The 2012 BOM Dresden is the inspiration behind this... now if I can only figure out the rest of the quilt!

Yes - I've begun to be able to identify fabrics by their designers. Both Kaffe Fassett and Amy Butler are not only unique but generally outstanding.

Your ideas are fantastic! All my scraps were the forerunner to my making my Wonky block quilt I also made several iPad mats (9"x 12") out of lots of 2.5" leftover strips. Pinking the edges and weaving the stripes is genius!

Thanks Ladybev. The Charm Squares come pinked on all sides. So other than the one inch trim I didn't have to cut further. The strips are too narrow for a Wonky Log Cabin or Broken Spider block... but they are so pretty I just had to do something with them!

I love this!!! {and the dresden!} Gotta try some weaving with my scraps now. I hold on to scraps... never know what to do with them but hate throwing them out. Awesome idea

LOVE your idea. I sure will have to try this. I have been saving all my triangle scraps. I think I will fuse them then quilt into mug rugs. You have inspired me to get going on that idea. Thanks!!!
