Dresden Plate - BOM July #1

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2012 »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Classic, Traditional

Materials

Bits and pieces left over from earlier projects.

What was your inspiration?

Amy Gibson's BOM Course 2012.

What are you most proud of?

I got through this one on a wing and a song! My husband made me a thick cardboard template, but I don't know quite what I did wrong, as when I came to put the fairy in the middle, the disc only just covered the raw ends of the blades in one place. I therefore fiddled it around a bit (too mean to cut out another fairy from my precious bit of fairy material, in case I needed it later) and managed to machine zig-zag over the discrepancy. I just hope it holds! One of the blades is a bit wonky, but I AM a learner!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

It's easier than it looks! Now that I know what I'm doing (more or less) I might just make a whole quilt of Dresden Plates.

Love that fairr/elf fabric you've used for your fussy cutting!

I've got some big fairies too, but couldn't find a place for any of them in this quilt. It was only some way into this quilt that I had the idea of using the ones that I did. Otherwise they'd be everywhere!

I really like the purples - and the fairy block, er, circle. I also had the same problem with the circle. I ended up cutting a new circle and reusing the smaller (how could that be?) circle for the modern Dresden plate.

That was clever of you! I just wiggled mine around and zig-zagged like mad in the hope that no one would notice!

Thank you. I quite liked the colour on this one - but then, I always did love a bright mix of colours, right from when I was a little girl.

Thank you - they were all leftovers from an earlier project that's waiting for me to decide whether I'm going to quilt it or send it to be longarmed (something I've never done before).

Your purple blocks are all so striking! I can't wait to see what you do with the finished quilt.

Thank you - I'm wondering how it will all go together, as a couple of blocks are a bit short and so will need to be re-done, or have a little border put on them before I do the sashing.
