Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Casual

Materials

Flannel from the thrift store. Cost me $.99.

What was your inspiration?

I haven't sewn a garment in over 20 years. I wanted to start with an easy project to knock the rust off me sewing skills. I made these for my youngest daughter who is 18. She isnt jazzed about the fabric (that's ugly) but these arent Victorias Secret. They just have to be comfy. The fabric was $.99 at the thrift store. I didnt want to practice on my good material. If youre wondering why I didnt match up the stripes.I had to cut around the red magic marker someone had decorated the fabric with. Otherwise the shorts turned out great. I combined a couple of patterns. These have a drawstring waist. No elastic needed. I jazzed up the edges with decorative top-stitching. Cams are da bomb!

What are you most proud of?

Making something useful out of fabric that someone else had thrown away.

My husband commented those look store bought. Little does he know that is actually an insult. These are better than store bought. Matched seams, reinforced stress points, pinked edges, attention to detail. Besides, moms put love into everything we make for our children. Stores cant match that. ;-)

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Sleep shorts are a quick and easy project and much appreciated by the recipient. I'm sure my daughter will get a lot of use out of these this summer. I need to make her one more pair.

Like these, very cute... and there is no comparison to store bought. You're being too hard on yourself about the stripes. I doubt you can find a pair with matched stripes at the store these days! Plus there's no way he can beat the price! Actually looking "store bought" isn't such a bad compliment. Years ago when I sewed for my skinny as a rail son I made sure his size 4 waist size 7 length jeans looked just like anyone else's Levis and was proud to do it.

I know he meant it as a compliment, Jean, ans I took it that way. But inside I always think "store bought doesn't mean quality".

Thanks, Karen. I think the daughter will like them, once she sees the fabric made up.
