Dragonfly Freeform

Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Difficulty:

Category: Jewelry

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Funky, Whimsical, Casual

Materials

Delicas, other Japanese seed beads (size 11 & 15), Swarofski crystals, Fireline, metal bead hearts & dragonflies, large metal button

What was your inspiration?

The colours were loosely based on a project I did as a textile designer, and I was fascinated by the idea of working freeform.

What are you most proud of?

This was my first completed freeform project, and I am still thrilled with the way it turned out.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Let it flow. Let the work speak to you. And if it stops speaking, put it aside, do something else for a bit, then go back to it. But whatever you do, don't let it get the better of you. You will be so proud when it works!

Fantastic, I might just take your advice and go Free Form! Did you find that one kind of stitch works better than others?

In this piece I used peyote, herringbone, netting, and in others I've added square and brick stitches. What I have found is that the piece itself, in the way it developed, and was restrained by the size of the piece and the choice of colours, along with how they blended together. The other factor was whether or not there was a focal element. In this case there was, and that's where I started. Everything evolved form there.

Also, freeform takes its own time. You have to be willing to put it down when you are stuck, rather than fighting with it. Then let it call you back.

Thanks for the advice. I will find a good focal and start from there. I a still learning a lot of the stitch and needle work so almost every project I take on I get stuck and walk away for a bit! Thanks again!
