Double Wedding Ring Quilt

Double Wedding Ring 2011

Detail
Double Wedding Ring 2011

Pattern Info

Pattern info for this project can be found here:
Nancy Ferguson at McCalls Quilting »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Classic, Retro / Vintage, Traditional

Materials

Scraps, Cotton, Batting & Thread

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to make something traditional which I could use fabric passed down to me from my Mum and Gran.

What are you most proud of?

The detail. Instead of machine stitching diamonds as the pattern suggests, I drew my own 'leaf/vine' design with air-erasable pen and hand sewed each section differently.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

It takes time. Make sure you sew keep seam allowance as exact as you can. DON'T use stretchy fabrics or be careful cutting on the bias - the small pieces loose shape and move easily. TIP - (I was told too late for this project) - Spray patches with starch after cutting to help retain their shape.

Above all - have fun, you can un-do any mistakes.

Beautiful, you must be so proud. The fabrics you have chosen give the quilt an antique and soft look, must have taken you hours, weldone. I am just about to quilt a large throw, I may have to work some by hand as my machine is too small for big jobs, but hand quilting on your quilt has given me encouragement.

Absolutely beautiful! Now I know what I can do with all those squares left over from the quilt I made for my grandmother! I also LOVE the hand quilting. I was afraid to do this (draw then quilt), but seeing yours, this will be what I try next. I usually just hand quilt 1/4 inch from the seams of each piece kind of like an outline. LOVE IT!

I started making this quilt a year ago. Have not worked on it continuously, but hope to finish this year. I ordered many 5 inch charm squares to cut in 2 wedges 2" x 3" to paper piece. Also dear friends have given me scraps. Although I have been quilting for a long time, I still am not good at all those curved pieces and getting them to match, so I am making my arches and the corner squares and plan to applique them on the machine to a white background fabric with invisible thread. For king size I will need to piece the background, so I am putting the seams behind the arches and they won't show on the front. Has anyone done this before?

I saw a quilt at a show (it won first prize!) which had the arcs cut out of one piece of fabric, not pieced or patchwork. These were sewn on top of the white background and then just quilted. It looked great from a distance, but when I got up close, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Talk about cheating. God loves a chancer!

Your quilt is absolutely beautiful! I tried piecing a double wedding ring but only got as far as one block that ended up as a pillow. I am considering trying it again as a paper piecing project, maybe a Judy Niemeyer pattern.

I have tried the Judy Niemeyer pattern - LOTS of TIME and patience required. It takes as much time to cut out the paper pattern for the piecing as it does to sew the fabric onto the paper. Goodl luck!

Your quilt is beautiful. Just finished mine for son and new DIL (see my pic). It was 2 years in the making and all of you are right, it was a gift from the heart, and they will never understand how much work it was. I discovered ONE fabric bled and had to treat the whole quilt before giving it to them. Also, I used some batiks but they did not stretch the way the regular cottons did so I don't recommend mixing those together! Good luck to all of you who try this. It is a challenge but the results are just stunning.

Good advice about using quality fabric. There is one in particular I used in this quilt that I'm wishing I didn't, but I'm the only one who notices and it was from one of my daughters' baby dresses. Too late now to take it out. (It's not 100% cotton and has a little strectch because of the bias-cut)

I am fascinated with the colors that you used in this quilt. I have been quilting for 26 years and have seen alot of DWR quilts through the years. It is an ages-old pattern and so beloved. All if takes is using an unusual mix of colors to make your quilt stand out from the restm, like yours does. I, too, make my quilts by hand and have resorted to having mine machine quilted just because it can take 400-500 hours per queen-sized quilt to do them by hand. I don't enjoy quilting as much as I do hand piecing so that is what I concentrate on! Non-quilters do not (and really cannot) appreciate the hours that go into making a quilt like this. You would have to charge AT LEAST $1500-2,000 to justify your time not to mention that you cannot make a queen-sized quilt for less than $150-200 unless you use JoAnn fabric, which I don't recommend. It will not last as long as fabric bought at a quilt store. It is run on an inferior greige base that deteriorates more quickly. There are now some more expensive fabrics at JoAnn that are more comparable to quilt stores that can be bought for $6.99-8.99 and with your 40% coupon, you can build up your stash a little cheaper but with better quality fabric. Anyway, I commend you for picking this pattern as a first quilt. I also picked a difficult star pattern for my first quilt and was told that it was "too hard" for a first quilt. I fussy cut some of the stars even! It turned out great and I gave it to my parents just one month before I found out that my mother had terminal cancer. I was absolutely driven to give this to my parents for Christmas and must have known on some level that they needed it right then. Funny how life turns out sometimes. Good luck on your next quilt. Oh heck, you don't need any luck................

I agree 100%. I've been asked several times to make quilts for people but I just can't. The cost is unreasonable if you are going to factor in your time, not just sewing, but shopping for and picking fabrics, cutting etc. Then having to part with it when it's virtually tattoo'ed to your lap for months! Waaaaay too painful! I've made some for my daughters and niece & nephew. I'll make more for other family members and always offer to help people if they want to make their own, but in the end they don't want to. I think a lot of it is - if you make it and give it to me for nothing, I'll take it, otherwise I can't be bothered. These are people who don't appreciate the point of making and owning a quilt. I don't blame them either when you can buy one in House of Fraiser, Next and Ikea very cheaply. The quality is cheap, but most people don't know the difference. Sad. Anyway, thanks for all your wise advice and best wishes. I truely hope your mum isn't suffering. I know it's a hard time for you all and I hope your quilt brought her some joy and comfort. All my love and hugs to you all xxx

When I was a child visiting my grandmother we children were usually ousted to one of the bedrooms (where her Victrola was). We would all jump on the bed. It had a DWR on it and I constantly traced around the beautiful pieces of color and the exquisite quilting. It's one reason I got into quilting. It's on my list as one to make. Thanks

This has always been one of my favorite quilts...but the difficulty of curved pieces scares me! I love the traditional scrappy look of your quilt and your originality in quilting! Thanks for the advice also on starching after cutting. Best of all - the having fun part. I always tell my daughter this....the joy of sewing is it can always been undone! :) Thanks!

I love sewing, what's the point of doing something stressful? I've been teaching my 10yr old and the hardest part is making her realise that it's not the end of the world when she makes a boo boo - it can be un-done. It's easy to abandon beautiful projects and get frustrated, but it's pure heaven when you finish something and it looks and feels wonderful. Don't be afraid of the curves, I was a bit nervous too but I gave it a shot and I'm sooooo glad I did!

I'd give it a go. Collect some matching/co-ordinating fabrics, Jelly-rolls, fat quarters or scraps and use the damaged sections as templates to cut new 'patches'. I'd do it by hand for definite. It can be done with a lot of patience. All my best to you and please do let us all know how you get on. I for one would be very interested to see before and after pics. Good luck!

I made a dwr two years ago an my best tip would be to pace yourself and set goals for each step.( Try to find a mentor who has made this challeging quilt before. )I made all my pieced arcs with paper piecing and would make 10 each day and so on. Plan to make it exactly as you have always wanted it to look, your favourite colours and favourite fabrics and make it as big as you can. that way in the years to come you will love it all the more and appreciate all your hard work. It is so worth the challenge and i agree a hard "baby" to ever give away.

I am working on a DWR using the Quilt Smart Technique. You use pre-printed fusible to make the rings. The blocks are turning out pretty well.

I've never heard of the 'Quilt Smart Technique'. Just trying to imagine... Do you fuse and/or appliqu the rings onto a plain background? That sounds like a great time-saver. By the time you've quilted it you'd prob never notice the difference. Nice one.

I have to agree with you there, hun, about the pleasure from giving away something that you have made. Most people tell me I ought to sell my stuff on Etsy but I just cannot do it, period. As a gift is exactly that a gift, you cannot place a monetary value on it period. When I make a gift it is made with heartfelt love and prayers, so I am in essence imparting part of myself to become a memory for someoneelse. No other place I would rather be. ^.^

I kept it until a fire devastated out home two days after Christmas 1983 right after gifting it to my eldest son (then 2 12 yrs, now 31) and promised him to make him another one identical if ever I could find the right pattern. Don't be scared of it. If you make a mistake, just undo the stitches. They're only tiny pieces so you're not wasting a lot of expensive fabric if you make a boo-boo. A great suggestion from derbydame - make a cushion cover first to see how you like the pattern. This pattern is also done in small sections that are all joined at the end to make the quilt, so if you get fed-up half way through, just make a smaller/child sized quilt... Get your scraps out...

If you have one made, the quilter can include your own scraps, and can incorporate whatever fabric of sentimental value you have around. Your daughters' baby or childrenswear, old bedding or curtains from a childhood home, a dress or apron that belonged to you, or your mother, Dad's or Grandpa's tie or shirt, anything that you like. I make quilts by commission, and have included all kinds of strange things. Because the DWR is made of such tiny pieces, you can include all kinds of things as you do not need such large pieces or pieces that match or co-ordinate, an eclectic mix of patterns and colors is great, the wackier the better. A quilt is a very thoughtful gift, but much more so when the fabrics used have some signifigance or connection to the giver or recipient. (preferably both)

Oh, don't be afraid of it. It looks more difficult than it actually is. I cut and sorted all the 'arc' pieces and stitched them when travelling or relaxing. The pieces are small so if you make a mistake it's not expensive to replace. This was my first quilt, so give it a go, you'll surprise yourself.
