Fabric fat quarters and yardage. Walking foot and free motion quilting foot
What was your inspiration?
My inspiration was this whimsical insect fabric I picked up while on vacation (yeah, I was in the quilt shops). I wanted to make something for my grandson and I wanted to play with circles. I ended up quilting these circles with a walking foot (288 circles), Ughhh! Of course when looking at it up close, I wasn't completly delighted with all my circles (hard to get all 288 perfect), but as I quilted along, I saw this wonderful little negative space developing (see picture) and I kept hearing Cindy Needham's voice saying "If you don't like the way some thing looks, create a distraction". I ended up quilting these little "Leah Day-esque" matrixes in between the circles and the quilt took on a whole new personality. That said, I am not anxious to play with circles again anytime soon.
What are you most proud of?
Each quilt that I make has some element of free motion quilting in it now. One more project under my belt, one more learning opportunity. My feathers may not be ready for prime time yet, but I will get there. I am NOT AFRAID ANYMORE.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Have fun with it
