Thanks for all the lovely compliments! The piece is 35X 30". The photo was taken from my cell phone. I went to a printer who enlarged the photo for me in black and white (cheaper, and you can also see your shade values better). I then traced the entire enlarged photo onto clear acetate (or you can use tracing paper, but it's easier, although a bit more costly, to use the acetate). After that, I began working in sections, working from background to foreground. In this piece, the furthest distance was the foliage at the top of the piece (impatients flowers, pine branches, rocks and leaves.) Then I found a fabric that was in the correct scale for the grass, I attached those two pieces together to get my background for the puppy. I did a lot of free motion stitching on the background before ever working on the puppy. I then searched for a hand-dyed fabric that worked for the puppy fur. I traced the whole outline of the puppy onto this fabric along with some line details for the wrinkles and eye, ear and nose placements with a light pencil line. I fre-motion stitched all my details with stablilizer behind the grey fabric, and when I was satisfied with the results, placed it on my background and stitched overlapping grass blades and small grey stitching to attach it. The rest was just sandwiching and binding! A long process, but very rewarding!
