This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Machine Quilting: Free-Motion & More »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Funky, Retro / Vintage

Materials

Cotton fabric, pillow form, walking foot

What was your inspiration?

I am making cushions for my new black suite (atually for when I get it)
I have just bought a walking foot and was very excited to try out some of the tecniques taught by Wendy on the Machine Quilting class.

What are you most proud of?

I am MOST proud of my quilting... Outline, Echo and Diagonal quilting (I did some little sunrays too)
Oh and I think my two cushions look good together... now to search for a pattern for number 3:)

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I have had such trouble trying to locate quilting feet for my 30 year old Frister Rossmann and finally bought them from England... then I was so nervous about using them when I finally got them!

My advice take this class of Wendy's and just get stuck in, I actually found it fun and I am so pleased with the result. Now for free motion quilting!!!!!

Love these pillows! I made a bed runner and pillows for our daughter using this pattern, great and easy and very cute. Now think I'm going to make a few toss pillows for myself, you have inspired me, thanks for sharing!

Hey Zaza thanks for the lovely comments, I will be looking forward to seeing your quilting. The walking foot is a great benefit to pulling the 3 layers though without puckering... you will really enjoy it, I am:)))

wow, you are really stepping up your game here! My sewing group has been making Quilts of Valor and used the same disappearing 9-patch from Eleanor Burns. It has a great scrappy look and is perfect for a group project...but thanks for the quilting ideas and tips! Must try. Looks like fun! Pam

Karen, I was trying to find the name of the large spotty fabric but all that is on it is Style 2366 www.benartex.com, hope that helps if you are interested in adding to your stash!!!

Desna, your cushions are wonderful. I particularly like the diapering nine patch. I am realllllly impressed with your wonderful quilting. It really looks good. Your cushions will look very good on your new black suite. I have never heard of Frister Rossmann machine. Is it made in England? Once again, nicely done. Thank you for sharing.

Desna, you must have been on line just as I typed the last message. LOL I agree with you about using smaller pcs to practice and I want to get to the class very soon. I've had a couple of things to finish for a church fair and am doing a small piece just because I love the fabric (I might even keep it for myself). I need to put the BOM on hold for a while, need to make decisions based on how little background fabric I have available. Keep up the good work on your pillows. You certainly have incentive now.

Yep still online:) I have been busy too, actually two ladies from my church wanted to learn how to quilt and asked me to teach them... so every Friday they come round and we quilt together it has been a blast. We are talking about moving it to the church hall and opening it up to whoever wants to join in when they feel more confident. This class has pushed me onto really learning more so I can pass it on... great fun.

I wish you did too Pat, although by the look of your wonderful quilting you could take the classes. It is nice to have some others interested and wanting to talk 'quilting' ;)

Yeah Desna! You're black suite is on the way and your pillows are really going to make the room. I just LOVE your quilting on this. I'm enrolled now so maybe I'll finally do actual quilting on my BOM. Great job. Love your pillows!

Thanks Jean it is a great course and Wendy is lovely, you will enjoy it. I really couldn't believe how easy it was to quilt these techniques with the proper walking foot. I am really hoping the same goes for free motion quilting!!!!

I love the attic windows one especially - the centers are so pretty. But I like the combinations of all of them. Great job on the quilting. I better get moving, you'll be way ahead of me in classes. Glad you were able to get the couch you wanted

Thanks Surfside6 I am loving making these smaller projects as they are an easy size to cope with to learn the quilting methods from the class. Im being left behind with the BOM's as I am so taken up with these cushions!

Oh, those are lovely - and your quilting is excellent! I have a 36-year-old Frister & Rossmann Cub 4 (very tiny) and the walking foot I got for it was made by Juki. It works extremely well and although I now have a much larger, new Pfaff sewing machine (mainly for the larger space to squash my quilts through), I would NEVER part with my dear old trusty F&R, on which I made my first, quite large, quilts, including the double-sided one on which I did my first real free motion quilting. You're obviously doing well and I can't recommend the Frister & Rossmann too highly, however old it is!

thanks pat I am actually surprised how fun it was to do these quilting techniques. I love my F&R but if I go on to make larger quilts I may have to invest in another sewing machine, although I will never let go of my good old trusty F&R.
