Don't give up so easily. Just find a hat pattern that will fit him in plain stocking stitch with a rib edging. For the spikes they were around 24 stitches and increased at 3 points evenly until only a couple of stitches were left. I'm sure you can make an adorable hat no trouble :)

It was in Simply Knitting magazine Issue 76 (February 2011) so you can look for a back issue but I checked and they're sold out online. I found a copy for sale on ebay.co.uk though.
