Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Other

Style: Romantic, Traditional, Classic

Materials

Sugar Paste, red and green food colors, brushes for food, gum arabic, #28 floral wire and #22 floral wire.

What was your inspiration?

I love roses, and have been making them for a few years now. I wanted to learn the technique of adding wired petals to the flower. I have always been able to build a rose on a wire, but the petals have always been added by gluing. Now, I can get the more real look of a rose by adding petals one at a time that are made separately on thin floral wire.

The inspiration for the color technique was simply me messing around! I painted the already red petals with liquid food color. The wired petals, I made and then painted after they were dry. I re-hung them to let the food color dry. As I applied each sugar paste (gum paste) petal to the inner petals, I painted them very carefully!

What are you most proud of?

This is truly the prettiest rose that I have ever done! I am so excited to make more!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Know something about making the rose to begin. If you want to learn this, one of the best ways is to search online for how-to videos. YouTube has some excellent tutorials from genuinely great teachers and pastry chefs too.

This is gorgeous. How long did it take you to make?

It takes one day for the petals on stems to dry,and I like to give the rose center 24 hours before adding wrapped petals. Then I begin painting a deep red food color on the inner petals as I place them. I paint the same red on the wired petals just before adding them, giving them a little time to dry. Altogether, it takes a couple of days.
