I used paper mache letters, bought at my local craft store. Mod Podge to decoupage and adhere designer papers to alter the letters. Wood and chipboard nautical embellishments, rope, ribbon and designer scrapbook papers to decorate...
What was your inspiration?
My latest customer wanted a nautical theme of her 1st grandson's name Marcus to match his nursery that is also decorated in the same theme. This was my first time creating something, completely masculine. In my first attempt I started off using a more whimsical nautical theme, with the stripes and bright orange and blues. However, after showing her this first look, she decided to go with the more classic vintage nautical themes in the second picture.
What are you most proud of?
Not using any of my paper flowers for decorations, was kind of a new experience for me, given that I am so use with working with more feminine styles. I think working with a very masculine theme was just as much fun as any of my other projects. It's interesting how just a little bit of reworking and details can change the look of an order.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
I struggled with this latest piece, but I think it came out nicely when it was all said and done. My advice would be to just have fun and give yourself some room for error. Have patience and it will all work out. In the end I was able to make my customer happy-- and that's what matters most to me.
