Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this piece. All I used is pastel pencil and worked with shading and kneaded eraser to develop the face.

It could be how you are sharpening the pencils. Try shaving the wood without touching the 'lead' and then use a piece of sandpaper to form the tip of the 'lead'
