Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Quick-Strip Paper Piecing »

Instructions

This quilt incorporated Peggy Martin's strip paper piecing block - Sailor's Delight for the center and top and bottom half stars. The setting was inspired by a quilt pattern from Kim Diehl and the star fish blocks were my own design.

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Whimsical

Materials

100% Cotton Fabrics. The colors were all from a 24 set of coordinating fat quarters from Blank Fabric. The background was a combination of medium and light tone on tone grays.

What was your inspiration?

I've just started to learn to applique and I took Peggy Martin's strip paper piecing and I wanted to incorporate the two techniques into a project with traditional piecing.

What are you most proud of?

I had the set of coordinating 24 fat quarters from Blank Fabrics that I won at a guild meeting. I don't typically like really bright colors so using them ALL in the project was really a stretch for me.

Thank you. I had the grays (both the medium and light gray) for quite a while and never could work them into a quilt until now. The gray was perfect to tone down all the bright fabrics yet still let's them shine.

This is great! Love the starfish & the whole arrangement. Get out of your comfort zone more often with bright colors - you're good at it!

Fantastic quilt!! It is such fun to combine different blocks, and you did a masterful job marrying all of these together to make a wonderful design. I love the whimsy of the starfish appliques, and, of course, your name for the quilt is just too much fun!! So glad you made this incredible quilt and shared it with all of us!

The starfish are so original & a perfect fit with the mariner's compass blocks. Great use of colors, but above all I love the name you've given this quilt.
