Strip The Willow - "Two From One Jelly Roll Quilts" by Pam and Nicky Lintott

Instructions

This is a modified rail fence pattern. Each strip set uses 4 jelly roll strips. The center strip is trimmed to 2 inches. One jelly roll strip is cut in half (1 1/4 in) for the strips on each side of the center strip. Use the other 2 jelly roll strips for the top and bottom pieces.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Materials

Jelly Roll - Minick and Simpson for Moda - Clermont Farms; 100% cotton batting

What was your inspiration?

I made this lap quilt for my Dad. He sleeps in a reclining chair because of allergies. I thought the fabric collection was pretty, but not too feminine. I've since fallen in love with all red, white, and blue quilts and the fabrics designed by Minick and Simpson!

What are you most proud of?

This was the first project I'd made with jelly roll strip sets - mine came out nice and straight, not bowed. I learned to measure from the center seams to cut the blocks. I'm not sure the jelly rolls with vertical stripes are the best for this pattern, but I'm okay with the way it turned out.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Sew two strips together and the sew the pairs together. Alternate the direction of sewing as you add each strip. I used a fabric pencil to draw an arrow to keep track. Use spray starch or Mary Ellen's Best Press when you press. The quilting is simple diagonal lines made with a walking foot.

I've just seen your comment about my quilt made with this pattern and just had to come over and have a look! I think yours looks a real knockout in the fabrics you've chosen - and so very different from mine! The Lintott books are super, aren't they? I'm sure your Dad loves it!

I had to pop over and have a nosey here too for the same reason ;-) Interesting seeng 2 quilts made from the same pattern but completely different fabrics. Also one with a "busy" border and the other plainer... yet both suit their quilts. Thanks for giving this newbie MORE things to think about LOL!

I really REALLY like this quilt! What a fun way to do the stripes... alternating the size of the cuts. Thanks for sharing how you did it! I might have to copy your idea!! :) ~pris

Awe, your dad will be so happy and warm now. I like the stripes, it gives it more movement.
