Materials

Crown Royal Bags collected from friends, flea markets and yard sales over about 20 years.

What was your inspiration?

I teach a class called Planet Earth. One of the themes we look at is sustainability and learning to reuse and recycle. Two or three years ago I was given a bottle of Crown Royal as a gift and I couldn't bring myself to throw out such a nice cotton bag. I mentioned this to friends who laughed and said they also had several around, so I began collecting them.
Since my son was in college, I also had a little more access to these than some people and my son would collect them at parties and from his firends as well.
After four years, I had almost 250 of them. ( I also scored about 75 at a flea market for $5)
It only took about a week to measure, cut and sew them up. I gave the quilt to my new soon-to-be daughter-in-law for Christmas.

What are you most proud of?

This project has really opened my eyes to huge amount of material out there that could be recycled into some pretty cooll projects. When new cotton is going for $14 a yard, I bet thrift shops and flea markets could become an easy source of fabric at much reduced prices.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Don't even try to collect all of these on your own. :)

I love these bags for scrabble chips, have used them for jewelery and a change bag never thought about a quilt how clever

This is great! I love finding new uses for "old" materials. Great idea!

A friend has a bunch of these and has asked me to make them into a quilt for him. I'm glad I saw these pictures, because I had no idea how to start. This gives me some ideas. Thanks.
