Instructions
There are many pictures of these online and I looked at a few and then madet this. Just figure out about how big you want your roll and add a little for seams. Cut doulbe what you need and fold it over so you two nice sides. Fold up the bottom and draw lines where you want your pockets and sew. I used a decorative stitch with contrasting thread. Fold down the top
For the cover, chain stitch the lenth of your roll and then select a stitch that you like. I just used a simple shell stitch. Crochet until you have the correct height and finish off. I made mine a little too wide so folded it in on the inside of the roll - it looks nice flush, too. Then sew it in place using a matching thread. Chain stitch the length of a tie and then single stitch across to give it some heft. I had two beads on-hand so tied them on the ends. You could stitch this in place at the back, I did not.
On another roll I made I took numeric stamps and stamped the hook letters at the top of the pockets which looks really cute. But I was not sure if my daughter-in-law would have other, larger size hooks so did not do this on this roll which was for her. I made some extra pockets, too, for future hooks. She had two hooks already so I filled in the other size hooks from C to K with my extras. If you make this for a beginner you could just give them some starting hooks, I would suggest F, G, H, I and J as a nice set with which to start.
