Crochet Critters
Instructions
Crocheted Critter (also known as a Star Muppet) By Nancy Pawlowski Materials: Size G or F crochet hook and a few yards of worsted weight yarn. Chain 4 or 5 (depends on how tight you crochet) and slip stitch to beginning chain to form a ring. Head: Chain 6 from the join on the ring. In this chain of 6 you will skip the first chain, single crochet in the 2nd chain, put one double crochet in each of the next 4 chains (back to the ring). This forms the head/neck of the critter. Put 1 single crochet into the ring then chain 5. Right Arm: Skip the 1st chain, single crochet into the 2nd chain and each of the next 3 chains (4 single crochet stitches total). Put 1 single crochet into the ring then chain 5. Right Leg: Skip the 1st chain, single crochet into the 2nd chain and each of the next 3 chains (4 single crochet stitches total). Put 1 single crochet into the ring then chain 5. Left Leg: Skip the 1st chain, single crochet into the 2nd chain and each of the next 3 chains (4 single crochet stitches total). Put 1 single crochet into the ring then chain 5. Left Arm: Skip the 1st chain, single crochet into the 2nd chain and each of the next 3 chains (4 single crochet stitches total). Put 1 single crochet into the ring then slip stitch to the bottom of the double crochet made last on the head (closest to the ring). Fasten off and weave in loose ends. Glue wiggle eyes to the “head” with craft or school glue (one that is stiff and not runny). Or use paper punches and draw on black pupils for eyes. The “head” curves down slightly while the arms and legs curl in slightly. The critter can be put over a pencil or pen by using the hole in the middle of the critter. A student in my class brought one to me to figure out the pattern (about 25 years ago). I have made these a part of my classes as they cover the basic stitches and are about 5-10 minutes to make one.
What are you most proud of?
I give these out at Halloween (instead of candy) put on a halloween decorated purchased pencil. One year a little girl saw I was giving these out and said "Mom! THIS is the place!" since she had gotten one the year before and was glad to find out where to get more. This Halloween a mother told her kids that I had spent time making these especially to give out and they should give me a special "thank you" for such a nice gift.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Be sure you know how to go into the ring made and not work in the stitches but thru the middle of the ring. It does make a difference on how they turn out. Don't be afraid of the curling as that is part of the charm of the "critter."
These are only about 2-3 inches tall, so are easy to make. Be sure to use a good glue to put on the eyes as they can fall off (I use tacky glue instead of regular white glue, it holds better).
