I like the way you combined your color and was wondering something. If you cut the background in four pieces, do you add a 1/2 inch to the square before cutting. Great idea. I'd like to be able to do it too but I'm a novice and I have screwed up so many blocks I've been tring to stick to the rules.

I cut mine into 7" pieces and sewed together. You really only need 6 1/2" sections, but because I was appliqueing the dresden plate I didn't want to risk it being a tad too small.

I like all the contrast and how the fabrics work together. Gives the eyes lots to look at. It will be interesting to see how you quilt this.
