Kaffe Fasset Fabrics and Batiks

What are you most proud of?

I wanted a pop of jewel tone color for the sashing and found this batik that I love. I think it works very well with the busy blocks. For the backing, I have selected a deep rich royal plum color, very exciting. Still pondering over the binding, but plenty of time till I get there. Goal this week is to seam the backing, get it all pinned in place and start the quilting. I will not be doing a lot of quilting on this piece, I will be stitching in the ditch and probably call it a day at that point. I don't want to detract from the beautiful fabrics and I think a lot of quilting on the top would just be gilding the lily.

I have a full cabinet of Kaffe fabrics that I've been drooling over for 4-6 yrs. I just wasn't sure how I wanted to use these busy fabrics. You have totally inspired me to cut into them. I just joined Craftsy so after the holiday sewing, I'll start cranking this one out. I'd like to know if there are any needle pointers out there that loved Kaffe in the 70's. I went to London just to find his fabulous yarns. That man is the Elton John of fiber. Love every thing he creates.

I do too Terry, I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. I'm thinking of binding the edge with the vibrant Kaffe green, the backing is a deep royal plum. I think the green will pop the bits of green in the quilt top and look lovely against the plum on the backing.

Jusr beautiful, I agree about the quilting, you do not want to detract from the wonderful job you did on the patterns those gorgeous fabrics. Enough adjectives :). I am sure you get my point.

I think you are very wise not to do too much fancy quilting on this - it would probably get lost a bit in the patterns of the gorgeous fabrics - that would be a lot of effort wasted! Reserve your FMQ for a project made of plainer colours. This is just too beautiful as it is!

Oh, beautiful!. I think you did a great job of placement of the blocks. That is quite a tricky endeavor and you mastered it. I am so happy for you. I also agree with your plan for limited quilting. With all the work of the blocks and your gorgeous color choices ---- LET THEM SHINE. Plum on the back sounds perfect. Would you consider a very narrow binding of your leftover fabrics or perhaps just the light green? Or a double sided binding with a plain front and printed from scraps back. This from a person who has not even finished the blocks yet. I am living vicariously thru you, you understand. LOL

Initially I was thinking of a sampler binding utilizing all the different fabrics in the quilt, but I have since changed my mind and am going to use the lighter green Kaffe fabric for the binding, I think it will pop the bits in the quilt blocks and look well with the plum backing. When I was looking at this quilt in the photograph, it comes up very "blue". It was an overcast day so it was interesting to see how it read in the natural light. It reads more "green" to me when I look at the photos blocked out in the mosaic before the sashing. So, to balance things a bit, I think the green binding will help the green bits pop.

Well, it's a bit too small for my bed, but it will live in our living room. I have a wall full of beautiful oil paintings of the Sonoma and Mendocino coastline and it just picks up all of the colors so well. I have white sofa's that face each other, so it will likely be draped across on of them. We actually use our quilts in our home.

Just WOW! the sashing is great & I agree with you about the quilting - no reason to put a lot of quilting on top of those fabrics - although you might want some simple quilting in some of the larger open spaces.
applekrisp on craftsy.com
Nov 05, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Yes, I was thinking about that on some of the blocks that really don't have a lot going on in them. I will probably do so very sparingly though. Glad you approve of the sashing, it sang to me in the store...lol.
