What advice would you give someone starting this project? Get yourself a design wall...you can make it simply by putting a piece of batting up on your wall. It's good to see things at eye level, instead of on a table, bed or floor. The batting works like a flannel board and you can just smooth your block onto it without having to pin and it will stick. Then stand back and take a look. I like to take photos at this point and see if there is anything that I don't like. Sometimes, looking through a camera, will give you that distance that you need to be properly critical. Swap out the bits you don't like and continue on. You'll have a more pleasing result. My other suggestion is to get yourself a quilter's color wheel, if you can't find one, get a simple artists color wheel. They are inexpensive, costing about $1 -2 . If you look at my blocks you will see that I use colors that are next to each other on the color wheel and then pop in something from across the color wheel. Quilts made in this way tend to be dramatic and eye catching. So, pick your favorite color, work in the colors on either side, one, two or three out. and then work in the color from across the way and see what happens. Try pulling fabrics and doing that a few times, you'll get the feel and have a wonderful effect!
