This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2012 »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Whimsical, Mod

Materials

A jelly roll of yellows and oranges for the sun and rays and a scrap of fabric from my stash for the grassy area of the block.

What was your inspiration?

The Craftsy Block of the Month for April 2012.

What are you most proud of?

That I was able to gradate the intensity of color for the sun's rays with the brightest closest to the sun, radiating to yellow furthest from the sun. I love how this block turned out!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

English paper-piecing is easier than at first glance. I was pretty intimidated by the small size of the hexagons in the sun's rays, but it turned out to be a fun and relaxing experience.

My advice would be to create two plastic templates for each size of hexagon required. One template for the finished size, as provided in the instructions and one that is 1/4" larger for cutting out the hexagon from the fabric. This would have saved me so much time, had I thought of this earlier!

I basted each hexagon at each of its six corners. After attaching them into a strip, I cut the basting threads in the center of two adjacent corners. Removing these shorter threads was easier than trying to remove the entire basting thread at once and reduced the chance of distorting the shape.
